Davao Overnight Trip

One of the pleasures of long weekends is the chance to go to places that you’ve never been to before. In one of those long weekends, I decided go to Bukidnon and join an educational trip to Davao City with my cousin’s family. The main purpose of that trip was to visit an organic farm called Balik Bukid in Calinan. The place is a bit challenging to find so we had to ask a lot of locals for directions. When we got there, our tour guide was the owner herself, Ms. Noela Garcia. If you are an environmentalist, you’ll surely appreciate this place as almost everything you see is recycled and environment friendly. You may see youtube videos featuring the farm. They also offer dining at the farm but you need to have a reservation. They do have a restaurant in the city proper, also called Balik Bukid, located in Quimpo Blvd., Talomo District.
The family then decided to spend the night in Samal Island which is a famous vacation destination in Davao, primarily for its white sand beaches. You can get there with a barge from Sasa Wharf and only takes around 10 minutes. We stayed in Camp Holiday Resort. This place is considered an affordable one compared to other resorts on the island and is a really good value for money. At first I was hesitant about the place because it was literally just beside the Samal Ferry Wharf but once I got to see their beach area, it was actually very clean. They also put up nets to prevent sea trash from coming in and as a safety fence so you wouldn’t have to worry about your children wandering too far from the shore.

Aside from the beach, they also have a mini playground for kids just beside the main pool which is 4-feet deep. There is an infinity pool along the beach area but it’s exclusive for overnight guests only.

The next day, since we were not able to have a good look at some places when we travelled to Davao the day before, we decided to at least see some bits of the city proper before going back to Bukidnon. We stopped by San Pedro Cathedral in Poblacion District to light some candles. Across the Cathedral is the City Hall.

We had our lunch in Balik Bukid restaurant in Quimpo Blvd. The place is like an extension of their farm - almost everything you see is recycled. Their menus are in board games in which you can actually play while waiting for your orders. The ambiance of the place is like you’re in a native house in a rural native area. Their foods are very satisfying and since the ingredients used are organic (from their farm), health conscious individuals don’t need to have any worries. The staff are also very friendly and accommodating. One of the things that really caught my attention is that they support local artists. You can see paintings and other art pieces inside the place that are for sale.

It takes around 4-5 hours of land travel from Davao City to Bukidnon. Along the way, we did a stop-over in Marilog District where there is a welcome landmark to Davao City as represented by a big statue of the Philippine eagle. You will also see vendors from the Manobo tribe selling handmade bracelets which are very cheap.

In Kitaotao, there is a viewing deck for a panoramic view of Bukidnon called Overview Park. There are also statues here representing the native tribes of the province. Though these statues already need some repainting because most of the colors are already faded, the view that you get to see is breathtakingly beautiful.
